  • SDTC Announces New Funding Opportunities for Emerging Clean Technologies: Projects related to soil and water quality now eligible for SDTC funding, in addition to climate change and clean air.

Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC), a fund for the development and demonstration of clean technologies, will issue a call for Statements of Interest (SOIs) on August 24, 2005 -- the first to include soil and water technologies, as well as those related to climate change and clean air.

The submission deadline for this SOI is October 5, 2005.

For soil-related technologies, SDTC is focusing on the treatment or containment of contaminated soils as well as the improvement of poor-quality soil. There are approximately 30,000 brownfield sites throughout Canada, with many offering potential for redevelopment. Eligible soil improvement technologies must be designed to improve land use and value, optimize land management and fertilizer use, or improve water retention, crop yield and vegetation cover.

For water-related technologies, SDTC aims to support new technologies that will optimize Canada's water infrastructure, update existing diagnostic tools and methods, and address public concern over the safety of drinking water.

The call for SOIs invites entrepreneurs to submit initial applications that are simple and straightforward. The SOI application phase is designed to provide SDTC with a good sense of proposed technologies for preliminary screening, without imposing an arduous process on applicants.

    Funding process key dates:

    24 August 2005 -- Call for SOI (Phase 1)
5 October 2005 -- Deadline for SOI submission
9 November 2005 -- SDTC invites successful SOI applicants to submit proposals (Phase 2)
11 January 2006 -- Deadline for proposal submission
1 June 2006 -- SDTC announces projects that will receive funding

For further information about SDTC's funding process please visit www.sdtc.ca. On August 24, applicants may also go directly to the online SOI application system, at http://www.sdtc.ca/en/funding/advice/soi_application.htm

SDTC is a Government of Canada initiative that finances and supports the development and demonstration of clean technologies to deliver economic, environmental and health benefits to Canadians. To date, SDTC has committed $132 million to 61 clean technology projects, leveraging an additional $347 million from project partners.
